Chapter thirteen

Kiran

The warmth of the sun and the fullness of their stomachs lulled them into a comfortable silence. Kiran was splayed on his back, Jude’s hand clasped in his as he ran a gentle thumb over the top of it.

Occasionally, he would ask a question and get a soft hum in return until even those died down and Jude’s breathing deepened. His hand went lax in Kiran’s, and when he turned his head to look at him, he couldn’t help but smile.

Jude was lying on his back, surrounded by a mountain of pillows. His lips were beautifully pink and stained from the fruit he’d eaten, and his face was relaxed. It reminded Kiran of the calm he felt when they were flying.

Like it was just the two of them. Like nobody else in the world had access to their space and Kiran wanted to keep it that way.

He wanted to sequester them away from prying eyes and vicious tongues and the cruelty he was desperate to fight. Jude didn’t need to know that. Jude didn’t need to be touched by the ugliness.

Someone as beautiful and lovely as he was deserved to be wrapped in softness and safety. And Kiran could do that, if he couldn’t do anything else.

He rose on his knees gently, slowly so he didn’t wake Jude, heart hammering at the realization his mate felt safe enough next to him to sleep, to be vulnerable and open as he was.

Kiran wanted to preserve it. He sent a quick text to Arne and then went about carefully arranging the pillows he had around Jude in a neat circle, until they were fluffed against every part of Jude’s body.

He pulled the edges of the blanket to form a nest around Jude and the pillows, standing back to look at what he had done, clicking his tongue when it didn’t quite meet his standards.

Just as he was about to call Arne again, the man showed up, carrying a bedsheet like a sack on his back.

″What the hell?” he whispered at Kiran as he approached, and Kiran threw his hands up.

″He fell asleep next to me,” he said. “I just… I need to make him comfortable. He has to be comfortable.”

″Okay, man,” Arne said pulling the sheet sack off his shoulder and letting it fall open in front of Kiran.

A few dozen pillows and blankets rolled out, and Kiran smiled happily at them, already excited about making the spot cozy and warm for Jude.

He waved Arne off, and his friend left with a huff and a shake of his head. Kiran didn’t care, he had work to do.

He arranged every last piece of soft bedding around Jude, leaving a small indent for himself when he was done. It looked just heavenly to Kiran, but something wasn’t sitting right still.

Something was missing.

He looked around and caught sight of his discarded jacket and tie, picking it up and draping it over the pillows next to Jude’s head.

He watched Jude frown slightly in his sleep before turning his head to the side and settling, nose buried into the material of Kiran’s jacket.
